opened the VMAs tonight in the performance everyone will probably be talking about tomorrow. Or, ya know, all over Twitter right now. It was...really weird. And cool. But weird, definitely weird. She comes out in drag, looking like something between Ralph Macchio
and Danny Zuko
, and does this long, crazy monologue as her male alter ego, "Jo Calderone." It was a little angry. "Jo" said that Lady Gaga is, "fucking crazy. For example, she gets out of the bed, puts on the heels...She comes out of the bathroom dripping wet and she's still got the heels on. And what's with the hair? At first it was sexy, but now I'm just confused." "Jo" was definitely trying to break through some gender norms, which is obviously something Lady Gaga herself has never, ever done. So this is clearly breaking some new ground here for the artist. But in all seriousness, it just came off as bizarre.
After the strange monologue, Gaga-as-Jo broke into a fairly awesome performance of "You and I
," and then Brian fucking May of Queen came out at the end for no apparent reason at all, and it was pretty cool.
