Draft? or Daft? Experts

The next time the NFL Draft rolls along and your
team has a high draft pick, pray they trade down.
As sexy as the high draft picks are an article in
the Yale Alumni magazine points out that Cade Massey
Assistant Professor of Organizational Behavior, Yale
School of Management finds that years of performance
data that was analyzed determined that teams are lousy
predicting which players will be stars and which won't.
Massey goes on to say that the odds of picking a star
are no better than a coin toss, and for years he has
been advising teams to trade away their first round
picks for lots of lower round picks, or more coin tosses
as he puts it. To make this point even more curious is
the fact that a team employee told Massey that the team
owner "believes you" but he just doesn't think that this
applies to him. No hint of arrogance their of course.
Hey, maybe Bill Belichick knows what he's doing after all.

VIVA MISS UNIVERSE

LAS VEGAS — A 22-year-old Mexico woman won the Miss Universe pageant Monday night after donning a flowing red gown and telling an audience it's important to teach kids family values.

Jimena Navarrete of Guadalajara was first to answer an interview question Monday night and the last of 83 contestants standing in the headline-grabbing pageant on the Las Vegas Strip.

Her one-strap gown flowed behind her like a sheet as she walked. Earlier, she smiled in a violet bikini as she confidently strutted across the stage.

Asked by Olympic gold-medal figure skater Evan Lysacek how she felt about unsupervised Internet use, Navarrete said the Internet is important but parents need to be careful and watch over their kids.

"I do believe that Internet is an indispensable, necessary tool for the present time," she said through an interpreter. "We must be sure to teach them the values that we learned as a family."

First runner-up was Miss Jamaica Yendi Phillipps, while second runner-up was Miss Australia Jesinta Campbell.

Navarrete — who's been modeling since she was 15 — is Mexico's second Miss Universe. Lupita Jones of Mexico won the title in 1991. Navarrete replaces Miss Universe 2009 Stefania Fernandez of Venezuela.

Navarrete's win thwarted Miss Venezuela Marelisa Gibson from giving the South American country a third consecutive win. Neither Gibson nor Miss USA Rima Fakih made the top 15 finalists.

With fans in some 190 countries watching on television and keeping tabs on Twitter, Navarrete and her competitors introduced themselves while wearing over-the-top national costumes. They then danced in silver and black dresses for the show's opening number before the top 15 finalists were announced.

The final 15 walked in swimsuits while Cirque du Soleil musicians played Elvis Presley songs including "Viva Las Vegas." The last 10 impressed in their gowns while John Legend and the Roots played a soulful medley including "Save Room."

By the end of the show, seven of the top 10 trending topics on Twitter had to do with the pageant, its contestants, its judges or owner Donald Trump. The mogul co-owns the pageant with TV network NBC.

Navarrete won a package of prizes including an undisclosed salary, a luxury New York apartment with living expenses, a one-year scholarship to the New York Film Academy with housing after her reign, plus jewelry, clothes and shoes fit for a beauty champion.

Campbell won the Miss Congeniality Universe award. Miss Thailand Fonthip Watcharatrakul won Miss Photogenic Universe and a second award for having the best national costume.

Annoying Sea Side Heights

NICOLE "SNOOKI" Polizzi will face a new charge over her behavior at a beach last month: annoying people.

Isn't that kind of like charging any other human being with . . . breathing?

Yesterday an attorney for the "Jersey Shore" cast member entered a plea of not guilty on her behalf to that charge and two others, disorderly conduct and creating a public nuisance.

Snooki did not attend the hearing in Seaside Heights as she was too busy annoying people elsewhere.

Her arrest came after beachgoers reported that she was bothering them, Seaside Heights Police Chief Thomas Boyd said. In what must surely be a coincidence, it happened the day after the premiere of the show's second season. Snooki was later released on a summons.

Snooki's trial is scheduled for Sept. 8. If convicted of all three charges, she would likely face about $500 in fines.

Nicola Roberts has hit out at reports which continue to claim that Girls Aloud will reunite without Nadine Coyle.

Appearing on GMTV, Roberts told guest host Kirsty Gallacher that the reports are unfair on the group’s fans. Kimberley Walsh also recently denied the stories.

Roberts confirmed that the band are still on their break but said that they will begin planning their comeback at the end of the year.

“We’re all still of doing our own thing,” she said. “Our break hasn’t been up yet, we’re supposed to have a year off so at the end of the year, we’ll start to regroup and talk about the future plans and stuff. But at the moment we’re all kind of dabbling in different things.”

On the Coyle reports, she added: “I think it’s one of those things that as a band we’ve always kind of had from day one and at the moment it seems to be very prominent.

“I mean we were in the band a day and had a press conference and they were already asking ‘When is Nadine leaving the band?’. And it’s kind of just one of those things that’s part and parcel with the whole [thing].”

Asked if the reports upset her, Roberts responded: “I think it’s quite deflating for the fans but we tend to not take it on board too much.”

Actress Sadie Frost Opens Up About Her Postpartum Depression in New Memoir

Sadie Frost's memoir, "Crazy Days," will hit stores next month, so sneak peeks of the book are starting to hit the wires. The memoir delves into Frost's experience with postpartum depression over several years during her marriage to actor Jude Law.

Sadly, Frost experienced PPD twice, following the births of her second and third children. Not only did she suffer a breakdown and at one point had to stay in a psychiatric ward, her disorder was apparently the cause for the unraveling of her marriage. One night she actually slashed her arm with a pair of scissors. Her description of how emotionally detached and empty she felt while cutting herself is creepy, but sadly familiar to many women who have suffered from PPD.

The Daily Mail recently came out with a lengthy article that includes an excerpt from Frost's memoir, and I believe that much of her story will ring true with any woman who has suffered from a postpartum mood disorder.

The article closes with these pearls of wisdom from Frost: "I've realised, as a woman and a mother, that depression is not something we like to admit to. The stigma remains: as a mother you are supposed to cope and not admit defeat. What saved me was being able to ask for help and to accept it. It was the best thing to do because as soon as I did, recovery was swift.

To come through and out the other end, into the light, you have to experience pain. Yes, there are moments of loneliness but I now have a routine and rhythm to my life that I didn't have before.

Every morning I wake with my four children. We have at least seven cups of tea during the day and at night we have cups of cocoa and cuddles. Glamorous it ain't, but it's real life, and I'm happy."

The good news is that Frost survived her ordeal and it sounds like she's the better for it, with four children and, now, a healthy and happy life.

Management: The Unnecessary Evil

Jason-

Thanks for the post on “Life without Management,” and glad to hear that you took a little family time. We have been squeezing in some weekend trips as summer winds down and those have kept us pretty busy as well. I have been thinking a lot about your post and I agree that accountability is a big part of the equation here, but I have decided that I am going to hold fast to my original argument. Management is an unnecessary evil.

In thinking about this issue, I keep going back to something Clay Shirky said (disclaimer: I have a huge professional crush on Clay Shirky).
“Institutions will try to preserve the problem to which they are the solution.”
Management does not want accountability because then it loses the power advantage, and the hard truth of this whole thing is that we still have a philosophy of management based on power.

There is a great deal of talk about the new leadership and leadership 2.0 and yadda, yadda, yadda…you and I both know there are some of those folks out there and some of those organizations out there, but I think they are the exception to the rule. You do not have the recent financial debacle with real leadership and individual accountability…you also do not have Enrons or the recent outcomes we have seen from BP and Toyota. Hell, with real leadership and individual accountability Congress would get a little work done.

Academics and consultants talk about it like it is the reality but it is not. The business world is dominated by managers who believe in power over, rather than power with. There is no room or reward for personal accountability until management goes away.

Bitch Fight

Former/current hot-mess Boy George spoke to Paper Magazine Blog and revealed his distaste for Lady Gaga’s recent remarks to Vanity Fair magazine in which she admitted that she still “occasionally” uses cocaine. The 80′s icon (and former drug addict) use to sing the praises of Gaga but changed his tune after she made this (no-so shocking) revelation. Here’s what George had to say of “next Whitney Houston“…

“If Lady Gaga were about to be exposed as a drug user I would understand her recent confession to Vanity Fair, that she is an ‘occasional’ coke sniffer, but why offer up this information on a whim? Could it be that her use of coke is not so ‘occasional’? As a recovering addict who knows how dangerous ‘occasional’ use is, I can think of no reason for Gaga to reveal this to her young audience.”

“My mum had the best take on this: ‘She’s reached the stage where she feels untouchable, you all get there, you did, son’. I can’t argue with that! “One has to wonder how much of a grip GaGa has on things. Up until now she has seemed almost annoyingly professional and focused and this seems out of character! Isn’t saying you’re an ‘occasional’ drug taker a bit like saying you’re bisexual? That usually means you’re raving!”

BRAVE NEW GIRL

Pop star ANASTACIA was too embarrassed to show off her scar from surgery for Crohn's disease until she turned 30, when she realised the mark was a sign of her survival.

The I'm Outta Love singer was diagnosed with the illness - a severe inflammatory bowel disease - when she was just 13 years old, and had to undergo an emergency operation to remove an obstruction in her digestive system.

The surgery left her with a visible scar on her stomach, and Anastacia admits she was ashamed of anyone spotting the mark - but now she sees it as a badge of honour.

She tells Hello magazine, "I was diagnosed with Crohn's disease, an inflammatory condition of the bowel... I found a lump in my abdomen and that's when doctors discovered I had Crohn's. I have a four-inch scar on my tummy where surgeons removed this mass from inside. I used to be ashamed of this scar but by the time I was 30 I didn't mind flashing my belly. To me the scar is like a war wound - it proves I survived."

he Kardashian family is deeply divided over Kourtney's decision to stay with Scott Disick, reports the new issue of Us Weekly, on stands today.

"Kourtney feels like she lives two lives, because half the family has accepted Scott back and other half hasn't," says an insider of Disick, 27, the father of Kourtney's 8-month-old son, Mason. In one corner, Khloe, 26, leads the critical crew comprised of mom Kris Jenner and brother Rob. Meanwhile, Kim, 29, and stepdad Bruce Jenner feel therapy has redeemed Disick, who has also cut down his drinking.
"Khloe is always the bad cop, and I'm always the good cop," Kim told Us Aug. 9 at the Elle Girl Model Search shoot. "I've been through more relationships than Khloe, so I can understand what it's like to go through difficult times and still want to be with that person. Khloe is like, 'You f--ked up, you're out."

Sources close to Jennifer Lopez tell People.com that the actress-singer won't be a judge on American Idol after all.

``Her demands got out of hand,'' said the source. ``Fox had just had enough.'' Lopez and Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler were rumored to replace Simon Cowell and Ellen DeGeneres.

With Lopez out, producers might return to the three-judge format.

Life without Management

Joe,

I am sorry for the radio silence lately.  Thankfully, I got to take a time off to spend with the family.  I'm now back in the saddle and ready for action.

Thank you for the tasty post last week where you posed the question: What about, rather than fixing management, we do away with it?  It is a great question and it seems to be an idea that resonated with a number of people.

As I've thought about the notion of eliminating the role of people supervisors, I realized that by doing that, we'd do away with a number of other things that we know and love:
  • Performance Appraisals. There would be no one to administer them.  No loss here because I can't seem to find any real evidence that they work.
  • Management Development Programs.  Perhaps now we can re-task our training folks to develop individuals on interpersonal and influence skills.
  • Management Meetings and Retreats.  No more golf outings or long days trying to stay awake in a hotel conference room.
  • Strained one-on-one Meetings.  Instead, we can meet when we have a reason to meet.
Imagine all of this recaptured time and energy.  I have to admit, it does sound appealing.

I think that there is one major problem with this concept.  If we do away with management, each employee must become more personally accountable for their own performance.  And, from what I'm seeing these days, if there's one thing we like less than management, it's being held accountable.  BP didn't admit any responsibility for the oil spill until they had no other options and no one left to blame.  In politics, it seems that the strategy for any situation is always deny any wrong doing and blame the other party.  Being held accountable or (gasp) accepting accountability is treated like the plague.

In fact, if each individual chose to be more individually accountable, we might help minimize our current management crisis (if we don't eliminate the profession).  Individually accountable employees help their managers to be successful by owning their own results and experience.  Individually accountable managers embrace their impact on others and realize that their job is to facilitate others' success.

Maybe instead of a management issue, we have an accountability issue.

Arizona Postpartum Wellness Coalition Makes Big Strides in Improving the Postpartum Experience for Arizona's Families

One of my favorite non-profit organizations dedicated to postpartum wellness is the Arizona Postpartum Wellness Coalition (APWC). The APWC is comprised of a group of amazing volunteers around the state of Arizona who focus primarily on providing education opportunities on perinatal mood disorders as well as much-needed community resources. APWC volunteers put on workshops, facilitate postpartum depression support groups, and provide a toll-free warmline.

The APWC was recently awarded a significant grant from Jenny's Light that will enable the organization to provide free educational presentations on postpartum mood disorders (in English and in Spanish) throughout Arizona, in addition to covering the cost for thousands of new brochures. This is endeavor is called "Operation Education," and the APWC is currently looking for volunteers as well as locations in Arizona to host the educational presentations.

The APWC also has a need for volunteer or low-cost web design help. If there are any web designers out there who have been touched in some way by postpartum depression and would like to volunteer their services for this truly worthwhile organization, please contact chibbert@postpartumcouples.com.
