JJ IS STILL MOVIN

This is the cover of the February/March issue of Wonderland. It appears that this one can be filed under the 'fierce' category! The theatrical trailer for Janet Jackson's new film "Why Did I Get Married Too?" has surfaced. Tyler Perry's latest looks very promising! I'm looking forward to April 2nd (& a new single... Janet, are you listening?!) already.

Fergie has landed herself the January cover of Cosmopolitan all over the world. Personally, I prefer the shot being used in Romania, as the Chile cover looks too same-y for her. Nonetheless, the Black-Eyed Pea looks great on both.

AVRIL in Wonderland

“Alice” is the new single from Avril Lavigne which hails from the album ‘Almost Alice.’ The music video for “Alice” will be directed by Dave Meyers and is set to be released as early as February. I can't wait to hear more news about Avril's new album. ‘Almost Alice’ is scheduled to be released on March 2, 2010 a few days before the release of the movie “Alice in Wonderland.”

Lavigne’s fourth studio album is reportedly due to be released in June, while her official first single is expected sometime in April!

xtina or not?

Back in December, a 55-second video clip that featured plenty of trees, spindly, spooky appendages, and one particularly grisly live birth, surfaced. Then, in early January, a second clip, loaded with images of a mud-smeared woman licking a tree and some strangely sexualized sap. Finally, on Sunday, a third, this one a slo-mo underwater dream sequence, surfaced onto the internet.

It became an ongoing saga of "Iamamiwhoami," the latest in a series of maddeningly compelling viral campaigns to seize the attention of Internet obsessives. Named for the YouTube user who began uploading the clips, the campaign has slowly become a full-blown frenzy!

Many people have named Lady GaGa, Goldfrapp and many more names into the ring. But through it all, one name kept popping up with regularity, Christina Aguilera.

With the release of ‘Bionic’ on its way and Aguilera known to adopt an alter-ego or two the repeated use of fetal imagery in the videos does remind us that her claims that the birth of her son Max was an inspiration for the record.

But according to MTV, Aguilera's publicist, “Iamamiwhoami” is “100 percent not [Christina] ...not sure why people think it is.”

But then who else could it be?

Find the People that are Saying Something Different

Good list man. I think that there is one thing that I would add one thing...

Seek out and collect oddballs.

Be curious and relentless in bringing different and new perspectives, experiences, etc. into your network of relationships. This can greatly increase your social capital and it does not happen on its own, whether you are developing relationships on-line or off-line.

We have a tendency to seek out and feel comfortable with people that are similar to us in someway and maybe share many of the same perspectives, priorities, etc. There is a great deal of comfort there. Human nature.

The more people that we bring into our world that do the same thing we do and think the same way we do the more that our network can get stale and stagnant. To some extent everyone is unique and brings something new, but we can very easily build a community of very like minded folks that are not necessarily challenging us, confusing us and frustrating from time to time. And we need some of that.

Social media can be helpful in seeking out experiential, professional, cognitive and other types of diversity if you are intentional about it. Social media can also be a bit misleading in this area, as there are a lot of clusters and pools of popularity out there that you can tap into and meet a lot of new people, but they are often people that are talking about the same things (sometimes each other), going to the same events, and holding on to a lot of the same perspectives.

You are a V.P. of Human Resources and you pay attention to what is going on in the world of HR. You can pretty easily get on-line and find the people who are talking the loudest about HR stuff. So can everyone else. And there is some value in staying plugged into that conversation. It is an easy place to meet people and share information and resources and ask questions as there is a common language and framework there. It is especially valuable for those that are earlier in their career and want to learn from and connect to peers.

But it is the people from other professions and interest areas that can most likely provide you with a new and unique and potentially valuable perspective.

Oddballs.

Oddballs are the secret ingredient for building a killer network.

So, from time to time it is important to take a look at your network and see if there are any oddballs to be found...
  • are you connected to people that are talking about things nobody else is talking about?
  • are you connected to people that do not agree with what everyone else is saying?
  • are you connected to people from a variety of geographies, professions, cultures, ages, etc.?
  • are you connected to people that are conducting their own research?
  • are you connected to people that do not make sense to you?
The people that occupy the popularity pools provide safety, comfort, reassurance and can help you think about what is going on today. Tradition, the idea of expertise and the status-quo live here in the middle.

The people that are on the edges offer challenge, confusion, discomfort and an opportunity to understand tomorrow. Learning, exploration and innovation live on the edge.

Hulk Hogan dished a lot of dirt about ex-wife Linda Hogan in his autobiography last year, and now she’s planning her revenge. Brooke’s mom, who complained about the “sensationalism” in Hulk’s My Life Outside The Rings, is hawking a tell-all covering “all the trials she endured during the marriage, Nick’s accident and the things she has accomplished.” “I don’t think [Hulk] will like it,” her attorney Ray Rafool told Pop Tarts. “Unless it is his version, everything else is not true. But Linda isn’t writing it for him.”

Linda, who recently settled with the family of son Nick Hogan’s car crash victim (”I felt it was the right thing to do”), is searching for more than just a publisher, though. How Social Capital Happens for HR

Joe,

Hopefully, we've established that social capital is critical to successful human resources. Our relationships and connections both within and outside the organization are central to our ability to produce breakthrough results. So, I'd like to turn our discussion more specifically towards the tactics and approaches that a human resource professional or leader might apply to create social capital.

Since I like a good list, here are four ways that HR pros can start to build their internal social capital. As you read this list, some of this might seem obvious. Despite how obvious it seems, most HR pros aren't doing them. We aren't taking the time to build our social capital. What we haven't figured out in human resources yet is that "having a seat at the table" isn't about a table at all, it's about having the social capital to exert influence on the direction and decision making of the organization. Here are some ways to start building that social capital.
  1. Adopt a connection mindset. Since there is value to being networked at all levels within the organization, we must first make the decision to connect with everyone we meet. This means learning people's names, knowing where they work, what they do, etc. It means taking every interaction (whether it's a meeting or a phone call with a question from an employee) as an opportunity to form a connection, not just an isolated interaction.
  2. Cultivate relationships. Whether you are a new to your company or have been there for years, making an introduction or knowing the basics on someone is just the first step. Relationships develop over time through regular and ongoing interaction. So, it is important to identify where the most important connections need to be made and have a strategy for regular contact with these people. For some, it might be a phone call once a month to check in. For others, you might schedule a coffee or lunch regularly.
  3. Get involved. The most effective way to build relationships with people internally is to find opportunities to work with them on projects or initiatives. So, while extra work may not seem too appealing, HR pros should actively position themselves to get involved in company wide projects. Through the work on these projects, you will find that relationships with the others involved on the project will happen organically.
  4. Help others as often as you can. As we are establishing our connections and building relationships, we should actively look for opportunities to help others as often as possible. When I say helping others, I don't mean just doing your job (although that is important). I'm talking about helping others when you don't have to, when it requires an investment of yourself to do it (like being asked if you would review an employee's spouse's resume to provide them some suggestions for improving it). Every time you help someone in this way, you establish goodwill with that person. The more goodwill you invest into your network of connections, the more powerful your social capital will become because every person you have helped will welcome an opportunity to return the favor.
These are a few foundation strategies for building social capital internally. Do you have some to add? Or perhaps you can share some strategies for how to build your external network as an HR professional (maybe some insight into how you became so well connected and what role social media played)?

What NOT TO DO if you don't want to be

What NOT TO DO if you don't wanna be seen as

Do You Know Who You Know?

Hey Jason-

I think you have done a good job of identifying some of the key roles when it comes to influencing change within an organization. One of the things to keep in mind is that not only do you need to be aware of who these people are but also of the nature of the relationship that you have with them.

True social capital goes deeper than simply knowing somebody (or being connected to them on LinkedIn or their friend on Facebook).

I know that I have personally been in situations where I have focused a great deal of my energy on having a quality relationship with the Don and many of the Influencers, but have taken my relationship with the Inner Circle folks and Loose Cannons for granted.

Those people sink ships. Frequently.

If you truly want to drive change you have got to be relentless in building and maintaining social capital and those efforts need to include all four groups to some extent. Social media / social networking tools are great for this, but within the organizational setting, nothing beats face time.

Are you in the habit of requesting face time on a regular basis with the Don(s), the Inner Circle, the Influencers and the Loose Cannons? Are you inviting them in to observe your department meetings from time to time? Are you sheduling departmental open house events, where folks from other parts of the organization can network with your team and get updated on what you are working on?

I think that HR leaders that are really going to be able to drive change are those that are constantly finding ways to weave themselves and their team together with other parts of the organization. It has to be a constant effort, so that the social capital you need is there when you need it.

Bbay's Mamma

The mother of Teen Mom star Farrah Abraham was officially charged for assault in an Iowa court on Wednesday, Radaronline.com reports.

Recap these shocking moments in reality TV

It was reported on Monday that Debra Danielson had an argument with daughter Abraham, 18, over "child care issues as well as other problems" on Saturday Jan. 16. When Danielson threw a t-shirt that landed near her infant granddaughter Sophia, Abraham yelled loudly -- leading Danielson to allegedly grab Abraham by the throat and "hit her along the side of her head and hit her in the mouth," a police report reads.

See a slideshow of controversial star moms

Police observed "multiple cuts to the right side of the victim's mouth."

Abraham's official bio on MTV.com acknowledges the friction with her mother:

"High school cheerleader turned single mom, Farrah is facing the challenge of raising her daughter Sophia without her baby's father in the picture. Farrah lives at home with her mom, Debra, who helps with childcare but also nags Farrah about every decision -- especially about how to take care of Sophia."

Remember these troubled TV families?

Danielson will next appear in court Feb. 26, where a judge will determine whether she will stand trial.

Social Capital and Corporate Politics

Joe,

One of the challenges I face frequently in my role as an HR leader is rallying support and organizational buy-in for big HR change initiatives. At the beginning of this year, my company made a major change in our employee health benefits plan. The process of getting the buy-in to make that move was much more complex than simply creating a proposal and presenting it for approval. As anyone will tell you who's gone through this kind of process, it's always more complicated to get approvals for a change initiative than it would seem because people make decisions for a lot of different reasons and not all of those reasons are rational. To navigate through these processes successfully, the social capital you have available to you in the form of key relationships and trust is critical.

I'm going to propose the following categories of people who are key players in the politics of decision making within organizations. To be successful in driving change organizationally, it's important to know who these people are in your organizations and establish a relationship with them. So, here are the players:

The Don. As in the mafia, there is generally one (maybe more) person who all decisions ultimately go through. They may not dictate any projects get approved, but they generally have no qualms about squashing one. In most cases, it's the CEO but I can also be a CFO or another powerful executive. The challenge with the Don is that they may not overtly make decisions but generally everyone knows that nothing moves forward without their blessing. This relationship can be a tough one to establish, but once you have it, running concepts by this person early in the process can save you a lot of time and anguish.

The Inner Circle. These people are generally those who have positions of great power organizationally due to the nature of the business and the preferences of the CEO. If you are in an operationally driven organization, the senior person or people in Operations likely yield a lot of influence on what gets done because no one wants to upset the machine that produces all the revenue. Likewise, in a sales driven organization, it's the sales leaders, etc. In many organizations, the CFO is of the inner circle because they are deemed to be the person in charge of pursestrings. They often wield a lot of power relative to what projects get resources and what projects don't. In my experience, these people are fairly easy to identify because they are typically pretty visible and their departments get talked about a lot. Don't make the mistake of assuming that because an individual is a member of senior leadership that they are in the inner circle, because that is not always the case. As an HR leader, it is critical that you establish relationships with these people because nothing gets done without their support.

The Influencers. There are people throughout the organization who are very smart, capable leaders who get called on to provide opinions and insights by senior leaders. These people may not be around the executive table when a decision is being formally rendered, but they have likely played a key role in influencing what decision is being made. In my experience, these people have been the Director of Finance, VP Marketing, the sales person who manages the largest customers, etc. Pay attention in corporate meetings, these folks will be called upon for opinions and thoughts. Also, ask your peers who has the most influence on decisions and quickly a list emerge of the people you need to know.

The Loose Cannons. In every organization, there are also people who may not be established as influencers, but who have big enough leadership roles in the organization to have a voice with senior leadership. The Loose Canons among that group are those who want to have their voice heard in every situation, whether they have anything of value to say or not. While they are not likely to help you get approval for your project, if they don't like the idea, they can get really noisy and defiant against it which might hurt your chances for approval. The key with the Loose Canon is to have a relationship so that you can keep them in the loop in the decision making process. If they feel like you are honoring them in your process, they are much less likely to stand in the way of your project.

This isn't an exhaustive list of all the players in the internal politics of corporate decision making, but I think that if you identify these people and work to establish relationships with them, you will amass some powerful social capital to assist in making things happen as an HR leader.

Heidi Montag's debut album may have set a record -- just not a good one.

In its first week of release, The Hills star's album, Superficial, has sold less than 1,000 copies, according to Nielsen Soundscan.

In fact, industry sources tell UsMagazine.com that the album has sold only 658 downloads to date.
