My friend Michelle shares her PPD story in an awesome video interview

There's a great video interview of a friend of mine, Michelle, who has been an extraordinary PPD advocate here in Arizona. Please check out her story by clicking here. This interview took place in Tucson over a year ago while Michelle and I, along with other women's health advocates, were attending a women's mental health symposium at the University of Arizona. This interview was just posted on EmpowHer and is part of an excellent series of PPD videos spotlighting several women's stories.

Chelsea Handler isn’t here to stay. The comedienne appeared on Jay Leno’s prime-time show Wednesday night to debut her Playboy cover, in which Handler appears in a gold bikini. But, that’s all you get to see.

Handler, who hosts the late-night talk show Chelsea Lately says she trained for the skimpy shoot by “not drinking for a day and a half.” Inside photos feature Handler preparing a Christmas dinner with her sidekick from Lately, Chuy. Leno had the cover blown up to wall-size for Handler’s appearance on his show — she had not seen the cover yet.

Handler insists the inside photos were heavily photoshopped, not the result of surgery. The host has spoken out on her show against women who get plastic surgery just because they think men would like it.

Jennifer Lopez may be 40-years-old but she can still get down and dirty on the dance floor. She proved it over the weekend at the LIV nightclub in the hip Fontainebleau hotel in Miami. La Lopez was on hand for the video premiere of her new single

Where will we go? Game on.

Joe,

I accept your challenge. However, I must say that you are feeling quite ambitious. Talking about business 10 years in the future in 2010 is comparable to what it must have been like to talk about business 50 years into the future in 1950--the rate of change is exponentially increasing. That being said, I will pull out my crystal ball with the tarnished sterling silver base and get to work.

And for the record, if you are going to put a referendum on talking about HR's seat at the table, can I at least put in a few requests before we go into lock down?
  1. I want my seat to be comfortable: nice seat cushion to sit on, big cushioned arm rests, you get the picture.
  2. I need a seat that is ergonomically correct. Don't want to deal with the back pain.
  3. Most importantly, the seat should be really stylish and impressive. When we finally get this seat, it shouldn't just be another seat at the table. It should be a seat that says, "I am awesome and I am here to kick ass."

Okay, now that these requests have been noted, I can let it go. Let's get on with the future.

Quick Hits

Just a thought or two until the next show.

It's hard to believe that their is a quarterback
with a worse passer rating than Jamarcus Russell,
but their is and that quarterback is Jake Delhomme.
He has committed 15 turnovers and thrown only four
touchdowns. His passer rating of 56.5 ranks 32nd
in the league. Yet Coach John Fox says,"I still
believe Jake is our best quarterback".
Who the heck is he kidding ! ? !

Now this is a rhetorical question, but is this
guy a moron or what? Joe Paterno MUST be a
genius, because we know he's a legend, and it's
hard to believe he never had a hard time with
this LJ, who prior to conception might have done
the world a favor by being a BJ. Here's just a
small piece of his retarded thought pattern on his
Twitter account after yesterdays loss to San Diego.

"My father played for the coach from "remember the
titans"," says the tweet. "Our coach played golf.
My father played for redskins briefly. Our coach.
Nuthn."

And this was reported by Profootballtalk on NBC
Sports: NFL spokesman Greg Aiello revealed
Monday that the league is investigating Larry
Johnson's recent tirade on Twitter.
L.J.'s use of the word "fag" in the direction of
fans and reporters could fall under the Personal
Conduct Policy. Specifically, the policy is aimed
at "conduct that undermines or puts at risk the
integrity and reputation of the NFL, NFL clubs,
or NFL players." Johnson's history of NFL violations
certainly won't help him. We still anticipate the
team disciplining him first.

In the words of one of the worlds great thinkers,
Bugs Bunny: "Sheesh, What a Maroon"

Where will we go?

Jason-

I have read, participated and listened to much talk in the past 18 months about the future of HR. I personally am not a fan of most of this conversation as it tends to be about "fixing" things that are in place today. My personal opinion is that business, organizations and how we create value are going through some really significant transitions and we need to have some clarity about that before we can really think about what HR (and Talent and OD and Leadership, etc.) needs to become. I like the points that the HR Bartender makes here about the future of work.

I personally am done talking about that illustrious seat at the table. I am done talking about HR as a strategic partner, yadda, yadda, yadda. I am however, very interested in how work and the organization is changing and how we as professionals in and around HR might play a valuable role tomorrow and the day after.

Over the next week or two, let's consider 3 questions. We can work through them one at a time and why dont we each provide 5 answers per question.

Looking down the road 10 years:
1.) How will business be different
2.) How will the organization be different
3.) How will work be different

So, lets meet back here in the next couple of days with 5 ways in which we think business will be different in 10 year...deal?

On last night's season finale of The Real Housewives of Atlanta, Kim's wig bit at NeNe, and NeNe tried to choke that bitch out. Kim's wig must have ate the footage, because they didn't air any of the fight. But they did air the aftermath, and NeNe declared that her friendship with Kim was as dead as Sheree's bank account. Well, last night in Los Angeles, the two put down their shanks down and hugged it out in front of Mr. Chow's.

Nothing brings two famewhores together like the paparazzi. This makes me think that the whole fight staged. SANTO DIOS! And if the fight was staged, maybe the whole show was staged. And if the whole show was staged, maybe all of our lives are staged? I don't know what to think anymore. I'm just going to choose to believe that NeNe still hates Kim. NeNe obviously had too many white wine spritzers last night

Cancelled politics

Calle 13 is dealing with the consequences of singer Rene Perez’s political leanings (and t-shirts) during Los Premios MTV on Sunday evening. First, the duo’s upcoming Halloween concert in Puerto Rico was cancelled. Now, Colombia is following suit and closing the door on the guys.

Manizales mayor Juan Manuel Llano announced that the Grammy Award–winning act would not be allowed to participate in an upcoming festival in the coffee-growing city after appearing at the awards show wearing a tee with the message “Uribe paramilitary,” possibly linking Colombia’s president with far-right paramilitary groups.

“It is an insult to Colombians that someone of talent would use this to attack Colombians and especially our president,” Llano said in a radio interview. “Manizales has decided under no circumstances or for any reason can this group take part.”

A man of conviction, Perez isn’t apologizing to the powers that be. Here’s what he wrote on his twitter page: “Fire at me with whatever you want, but I’ll never stop saying what I mean. I don’t care about the record label, the radio, no one.

Still More on Politics and Culture

Joe,

Are you trying to tell me that my ideas aren't all solid gold? :-)

I wish that I could fervently disagree with your points regarding politics and that an organization free of politics should be the goal. I'm afraid that I may be getting jaded by too many years in corporate HR and have adopted a pragmatic perspective of embracing politics as a way to facilitate change rather than railing against their existence.

On a daily basis, I think many of us are faced with the prospect of how to be less political and bring more transparency and authenticity to our work while balancing the risks that accompany that choice. Fortunately, I find myself in a situation to influence corporate culture in a significant way due to my role, but that doesn't make this balancing act any less complicated.

Good debate. I'm glad that we found a topic that we could dig our teeth into.

More on Politics and Culture

Jason-

Hmmm. I am still not sure if this is primarily a difference rooted in how we define politics or if there is something larger here. I agree that politics are a component or an element of an organizations culture, but I do not think that politics are a necessary component and I do not think that politics is a positive component. I totally agree that you can use politics to accomplish positive things, but that does not make politics a positive thing or even a necessary evil. We make choices that allow politics to flourish and drive behavior in our organizations,or we make choices to keep politics in check.

In my opinion, the more politics exist in an organization the less honesty there is. I see organizational politics existing (in the place of honesty) in order to protect the distribution of power in an organization. In most organizations the top-down organizational structure concentrates all power at the top and creates a false ideal of perfection rooted in proximity to the top of the heap. People are right based on who they are (title), rather than on the value of their ideas or decisions or their competency...the degree to which this is true can vary greatly from organization to another. Never a good thing.

For example, there are employees today in your organization that will not question or challenge your decisions because of your title. That may not have anything to do with you or your behaviors, but is likely about the amount and nature of politics that exist in your organization. So, rather than question or challenge you on a decision or an idea that might be really misinformed, employees with better ideas have to find political ways to maneuver you toward the right line of thinking. You may eventually end up with the best outcome, but there has been a real waste of energy and effort...because of politics. Everyone involved (and the organization) would have been better off with honesty and transparency, rather than the political approach.

I think that politics are a naturally occurring phenomenon that emerge from culture, but that does not mean that politics are good or that we should just accept them. The more politics we accept the less we are comfortable with honesty...that is why this issue is so strongly correlated with the leadership in an organization because it is the leaders that decide how much honesty is acceptable. The gaps are filled in with politics.

Organizations that understand and value shared and distributed power, that understand and value innovation and engagement, that are inclusive and truly in partnership with their workforce and the customers also treasure honesty. It is in those organizations that you will find the least amount of politics.

-joe

Politics and Culture

Joe,

Your post hit on one of the things I find most interesting about the concept of politics. It was very clear to me, if I read your comments correctly, that you consider all corporate politics to be a negative aspect of company culture. And moreso, that our goal should be to drive politics out of our organizations. In my definition, I don't think of politics as a uniquely good or bad thing, but rather as something that exists within organizations. Much like culture, politics can be positive or negative depending on the organization and the people involved.

As to the difference between politics and culture, I would suggest that politics is an element of culture. By my definition, corporate politics is the strategic and tactical understanding of the power and decision strucuture of the organization and the application of that understanding towards accomplishing a change agenda. You can apply politics towards something positive like getting approval for a new succession planning process. But, it can also be applied towards selfish agendas of personal gain or power grabs. Similar to what I would say about Washington politics, it's not the politics itself that's bad but instead the people and their motives that give it a bad name.

I do agree with you that politics today probalby does more harm than good within organizations because too many people apply politics to blatant self-promotion. But, I will also argue that if you are are to be successful within any organization, you must understand the politics of that organization and how to navigate that political realm if you hope to be successful in driving any significant change. The irony is that one would have to know how to "play" politics in order to change how the politics work.

Pop star du jour Lady Gaga continued her crusade for marriage equality this weekend in Washington DC. She spoke at the National Equality March before roughly 250,000 LGBT activists and straight allies. During her passionate address, she stated that speaking at the march was the single most important moment in her career. While her speech was mostly poised and poignant, her trademark Gaga outrageousness surfaced at one point, as she screamed “ARE YOU LISTENING?!?” to President Obama. A source that was in the midst of the crowd on the Mall said she had the otherwise-rowdy crowd captivated in silence as she spoke. You go Gaga! [Photo: Splash New Online]

The quest for marriage equality was nationwide yesterday as celebrities Sophia Bush, Emmy Rossum, Perez Hilton, Kelly Osbourne and others marched in West Hollywood to protest Prop 8.

Politics vs. Culture

Jason-

I have been struggling with this issue a bit and I think that it is a difference of language. You define politics as the unspoken way things get done at work, and I think that is how I would define organizational culture, with politics being one component of culture. I believe that it is a very common component, but I also believe that it is an optional component.

It may not be easy to do away with politics, because we have bought into the idea that it is just part of business, but I do believe it can be done and I think that there are organizations doing some really good work in this direction, with relentless focus on transparency, authenticity, and other characteristics that make less room for politics.

The truth is that politics, as I understand politics, makes already complex dynamics increasingly and unnecessarily complicated. Politics as I understand them are a waste of valuable resources (such as time, attention, trust, etc.).

I think that your five rules can help people be successful, but I do not necessarily think that means or requires that they playing politics. We might be viewing / defining politics differently… could you share a few comments on how you would define politics vs. organizational culture?

Jennifer La Lola

Jennifer Lopez must have been taking lots of notes during her hiatus from her last album Brave because now unleashing her new single Fresh Out The Even and unleashing an alter ego Lola, on this new online promotional campaign.

We've seen two different aspects of this done before. First, when Asia Cruise was promoting her debut single Selfish she also started an online promotional campaign titled WhoIsAsiaCruise.Com and now Jennifer Lopez has launched WHOISLOLA.COM and even a Lola Myspace page.

And we all know where she's getting this alter ego from now don't we? Beyoncé of course! Everyone knows Sasha Fierce is Beyoncé's alter ego, but the question would have to be is this going to work and is every artist entitled to an alter ego?

Well, the song was produced by Pharrell Williams features Pitbull. Last month or so the two recently wrapped a video which Pitbull described as "an upscale Eyes Wide Shut... where my role is being taken advantage of by these beautiful women who are, like, massaging me." J Lo, too? "No!," he jumped. "You’re gonna get me in trouble with Marc!" Thoughts?

The Politics of Politics

Joe,

I've been reading a bit lately about politics at work. In my opinion, politics exists in every organization once you have more than one employee. Politics represents the unspoken "way" things get done at the office.

One of the things I find most interesting about politics is the reaction that occurs with many when you even meantion the topic. The reactions range from a shudder to down right indignation and denial that politics exist. I have even found those who say that they don't play politics. My response to those who deny playing politics is that unless you speak fully what's on your mind in an unvarnished way at work, you are playing politics. The simple act of what to say to whom is politics. And it's not necessarily bad.

In an effort to decriminalize the topic, I want to share a few thoughts about how I think about politics. Somewhere in my career, I realized that there was a game being played at work. Not everyone seemed to be in on the game, but a few people seemed to play this game very well. Those who played the game skillfully seemed to enjoy their jobs more than others and they also seemed to be able to get things done that others couldn't. So, I started to try to understand the game myself. Below is a few of the key rules that I learned about the game.

  1. Know what is important to others and communicate what you want to get done in those terms. What is important to you isn't relevant to others, they are focused on themselves. If they think you can help them get what they want, they will help you get what you want.
  2. Build relationships everywhere and do as many favors as possible for others. Building up some social capital in the organization is the most critical thing you can do. People will help people they like. People will also go out of their way to return a favor. Use both of these concepts to your advantage.
  3. Find out the history of things because people have long memories. Many times, something is being done because that's what way we've always done it. In other situations, you can't get something done because it was tried 10 years ago and failed and "we aren't going to make that mistake again." By knowing the history, you can know what you are up against, particularly if you are trying to lead change.
  4. Never under estimate any person's motivation to act in their own self-interest. Regardless of how strong your relationship is with someone, know that they will protect their career and themselves 99 times out of a 100 when given that option over sacrificing themselves for you. So, refer back to rule 1 and don't rely on others to do noble things. When people do noble things for you, recognize that you have found a rare friend and treat that person accordingly.
  5. Finally, and probalby most importantly, commit to the change you are trying to make. Whatever you are trying to accomplish should be important enough that you'd be willing to let someone else take the credit for accomplishing it. If you are working on important work that really matters to your organization, then some of the "bad" politics won't matter as much. Commit yourself to results over personal credit. It's less likely that you will make a fatal career move if you are committed to the greater good over personal gain.

Politics can be bad, but that has more to do with the individual's motives than the policitcs themselves.
