Bust Out The LL Cool J Because Everybody's Doin' It On Glee!
Okay, fess up Ryan Murphy! Are you reading this blog? Because this episode was blessedly free of everything I recently complained about - and even more, it did exactly what I wanted. It concentrated on the kids and kids doing kid things! No congressional race, no Sue vs Schue. It was actually a very sweet episode. Plus, bonus sex! Teenage sex, which I don't necessarily encourage or discourage (so long as its safe and consensual) but I do very much enjoy anything that gets the PTC's panties in a twist.
Rachel and Finn
Artie has decided to take his role as West Side Story director way too far and has started directing everyone's lives. He tells Rachel and Blaine that they're lacking chemistry on stage. Instead of the obvious conclusion that Blaine doesn't like the vajayjay, Artie blames their virginity. To exhibit the right amount of passion, they need to have actually experienced it, says wise sex guru Artie. This leads Rachel to make a romantic sex date with Finn, who bails once he realizes that this has to do with her acting. However, a talk with Tina about her sweet, wonderful first time with Mike helps Rachel see that she does love Finn and she is ready.
After opening night, she goes to Finn's place to find him very upset. The recruiter from Ohio State has rejected him and he feels doomed to a small town life of failure. There's no other school for him. I'm just going to say, Ohio State rejecting you for a football scholarship doesn't mean no school will take you. Chill out, Finn. Rachel gives him the encouraging words he needs and then also her V-card. Based on my knowledge of teenage boys (I did teach high school for three years) I think the V-card probably helped more than the encouragement. I still think that Cory Monteith has the passion of a sack of rocks on screen, but it's a cute scene nonetheless.
Blaine and Kurt
Kurt and Blaine have decided to wait for sex, to make sure they're ready. This seems to be more at Blaine's request than Kurt's, especially since Chris Colfer's got eyefucking Darren Criss down to a science. However, a visit back at his old school leaves Blaine a little confused. He meets Christian, a cute new (and gay) Warbler who is itching to purchase a one-way ticket into Blaine's very well-pressed gray slacks. It's clear that Blaine's attracted to him and it encourages him to ask Kurt to "live a little while they're young," which apparently means hitting the most boring gay bar imaginable. As Christian and Blaine dance, Kurt silently seethes until he's interrupted by everyone's favorite self-loathing homosexual/gay basher Karofky. Yep! He's there, he's gay, he hooks up with dudes. He's also a "bear cub," which is a young, burly gay man for those not up on the lingo. Incidentally, why don't straight people have cute names? I feel left out. As a petite blonde, would I be a Tinkerbell? I deem it so. Anyway. After toasting Karofsky to baby steps, Kurt marks his territory by dancing it up with Blaine, who is Drunky McDrunkster. He tries to have sex in the car, but Kurt angrily brushes him off for being wasted and dancing with Christian all night. It's a strong moment, although the bolero tie he's wearing kind of diminishes his aggression.
After opening night, the two make up in an extremely sweet moment. I have to say that Darren Criss is one hell of a talent, because the sexual tension between Kurt and Blaine is much more prevalent than that of Finn and Rachel, and Criss is not actually gay. They forgo the cast party for a night of overly romanticized first-time butt sex.
Unrelated to Doing It
Santana is the most incredible Anita ever in their production of West Side Story. She killed it. And more, the performance of "America" was probably the best musical number Glee's put out in more than a year. I watched it twice, no joke. And this is coming from the girl who just last week said she was fast forwarding through the songs. It doesn't hurt that West Side Story is one of my favorite musicals ever, but damn. That was actually very, very good. Well played, Glee.
