Emmy Nominations: The Good, The Bad and the WTF

I'm just going to say it: I love awards shows. I will watch Ryan Seacrest inanely chatter on the red carpet, I will watch talented dramatic actors degrade themselves with cheesy musical numbers, and I will watch Joan Rivers obliterate them on the after-show. Loyally. Every year.  So, I am always pretty excited when award nominations are announced and today is no exception.

This year's Emmy nods are full of hits and misses. Let's talk about them.

THE GOOD:
  • The usual suspects getting the usual nominations they deserve: Mad Men, Dexter, Boardwalk Empire, 30 Rock, Modern Family. All amazing shows, each nomination deserved. Bonus: Randee Heller as Miss Blankenship on Mad Men for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series. Miss Blankenship! Awesome!
  • Friday Night Lights finally being recognized for the amazing, well-acted, superbly written drama it is. Bonus: Connie Britton and Kyle Chandler getting nods as well.  I think they made me cry at least once per episode each.
  • Parks and Recreation! 'Nuff said. Bonus: Amy Poehler's nomination, especially since I think she just might win (fingers crossed!).

THE BAD
  • Hugh Laurie for Best Actor in a Drama Series. Again. God, even he doesn't think House is a good show anymore. Can we give this one a rest, already?
  • Chris Colfer getting a comedic nomination. Again. Look, I know I have unnatural Glee-hate, and I genuinely do think Chris Colfer is talented, but he is not funny. If they are gonna snub Lea Michele this year, why nominate the kid who cries every episode for a comedic award? Again.
  • Mirelle Enos and Michelle Forbes' nominations for The Killing, aka This Show Couldn't Be More Sloppy If A Fucking Kindergartner Wrote It. Honestly, that show doesn't deserve anything at all, least of all these two actors who woodenly mumbled and fake-sobbed (respectively) their way through a horrible season of television.

WTF:
  • No Breaking Bad. Now, this was not a mistake on the part of the Academy. The show, which has swept the Best Actor in a Drama Series category every year, apparently aired outside the eligible window. Which basically means that next year, I want Bryan Cranston, Aaron Paul and that entire staff to fucking sweep it up.
  • Kristen Wiig's nomination for SNL and Melissa McCarthy's nomination for Mike & Molly. It's like the Academy realized they couldn't nominate Bridesmaids for anything, so they just threw this shit in. Both actresses rule (and totally deserve to be awarded for that film) but Wiig's role on SNL has been the same for years and Mike & Molly is just laughable. But like, not in the deserving-of-a-comedic-Emmy way.
  • Gwenneth Paltrow's nod for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series. Here I am with the Glee-hate again, but let's get real. One appearance of Holly Holiday was amusing. Her rendition of Cee Lo's "Forget You" was, I'll admit, charming. But her second appearance was gratuitous and making us listen to Paltrow warble through a song by the massively talented Adele was just plain insulting.
